Five Things Left to do This Summer

It's mid-August and Labor Day is on the horizon, but there's still a great deal of summer fun to be had for local residents.

In lieu of today's trending Twitter topic (#overthesummer), we here at WI Patch wanted to supply five late-summer suggestions to make sure we enter autumn without any regrets. (If you're not familiar with what a "trending topic" is, it's basically a phrase that a ton people are discussing on Twitter.)

So before you put the beach chairs away for good, don't forget to explore these ideas.

My Patch colleagues and I went out about a month ago and it was a helluva time. Well, except for the part where we didn't catch anything bigger than Advil. But the scenery itself (Fire Island lighthouse, Robert Moses Causeway) is a good enough reason to take a late night cruise.

Fire Island

We mention Fire Island a lot on Patch.  Whether it's Kismet or Ocean Beach, Fire Island is a mini Montauk that's way closer. Complete with bars, restaurants, shops, bars, hotels, beaches and more bars, you truly forget you're only 30 minutes from home. Did I mention there are...Wait, nevermind.

No, you're not Whitney Houston or Michael Bolton (did I really just say Michael Bolton?) but why not try to be for a night. Karaoke at Mojo's has been a hit for a while now and it's an exciting way to make a fool of yourself in front of dozens of friends. Our suggestion; hit happy hour first to get loosened up, and then hit those high notes.

You all know your editor loves to eat () and cook. Who doesn't? A farmers market in the summer is THE best place to find the freshest produce, fruit, veggies, meats, cheeses, etc.  here's one this Saturday (and the next couple) being held in the Islip Town Hall parking lot. And if you're whipping up something delicious, don't forget to invite me!

Car freak or not, this is a premium event run every year on Labor Day in West Islip. and I couldn't believe how many people/cars showed up.  Between the eye candy, raffles, food and actual candy, this a must-see deal. Plus, it's a boost to the local economy.  Win-win.
