Good Sam Recognized With Exemplar Hospital Status

The West Islip hospital earned an award for their participation in Project JOINTS.

Good Samaritan was recently recognized by the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) with Exemplar Hospital status for their voluntary participation in Project JOINTS.

The JOINTS (Joining Organizations in Tackling Surgical Site Infections) initiative is a federally funded program designed to implement proven methods used for preventing infections after knee and hip replacement surgeries.

“Exemplar Hospital status is recognition that Good Samaritan is a leader in best practice for joint replacement surgery and qualifies the hospital to be a resource for other facilities.” said Patricia Hogan, Sr. VP of Nursing and Chief Nursing Officer.

Good Sam said they have "stringent measures" enact to protect patients before and after their surgeries, including enhanced screening tests.

Susan Strejlau, 54, of North Babylon, recently had a knee replacement operation at Good Sam and said the surgical team went "above and beyond" to prevent post-surgical infection.

"Without knee replacement, I would not have been able to function on a day-to-day basis," she said.  "I continue physical therapy and have even progressed to walking up and down stairs without any pain or limitations.”
