Swirls & Twirls Coming to WI in October

Unique frozen yogurt shop will feature 16 flavors and more than 42 toppings.

It's not just the funky flavors and do-it-yourself style that will attract customers, claims Swirls and Twirls USA co-owner Joe Sala.  It's the atmosphere.

And in about a month's time, West Islip residents will be able to participate in the Swirls and Twirls "experience."

The store, which is currently being constructed at 494 Union Blvd. (next to the WI Post Office), is set to open sometime in mid-October.

"It is an atmosphere," Sala said.  "You walk in and immediately you hear the music playing, notice how shiny everything is, how clean.  The place is spotless."

Yes, Sala takes pride on cleanliness, but what patrons will also notice are the 16 unique varieties of frozen yogurt that are offered; including Brooklyn Cheesecake, Raspberry-Pomegranite Pucker, and Banana-Rama.

These flavors can be found at Sala's first Swirls and Twirls USA store, located in Massapequa Park.  It's been a mega success thus far, but he has even higher expectations for West Islip.

"It’s a great area, it fits all parameters of what seems to work in Massapaquea," Sala said.  "And the numbers are very close too; the population isn’t too different, the household income isn’t too different.

"My personal opinion is that West Islip will be a busier location than Massapequa Park.  And we serve about 600 people a day."

Actually patrons serve themselves.  This includes pouring their own flavors (as many as one desires) and adding as many toppings (which include fresh cut fruits and all the junk food classics) as they’d like.  Then, they'll place it on a scale and pay $.49 per ounce.

Sala says the best part is that most flavors are non-fat and under 100 calories.  Alternative options include gluten-free, kosher, sugarless and dairy-free.  "It's a healthy product and can even serve as a meal replacement," he said.

Already, Sala has received dozens of applications from West Islip students who want to work at the store. He says it's a safe place where kids love to hang out.   But getting inside could be an issue, especially between 7-10 p.m.

“We serve about two-thirds of our customers between those hours," he said.  "The line is usually out the door."

West Islip's store hours will be from 11 a.m.-11 p.m. Sunday-Thursday.  On Fridays and Saturdays it will be open till midnight.
