Government Shut Down Over Extreme Proposal Outrageous

Press release:

Hawthorne, NY – With hours left until a possible government shutdown, Planned Parenthood Hudson Peconic President/CEO Reina Schiffrin issued the following statement today:

“It's an outrage to shut down the government over an extreme proposal that would deny millions of women pap tests, breast exams and birth control. Attacking Planned Parenthood's preventive care hurts women, does not reduce the deficit or fix the economy and must be stopped.

“The truth is that the rider regarding Planned Parenthood would bar Planned Parenthood from being paid by Medicaid and other federal programs for providing women with preventive care such as birth control, cancer screenings, HIV testing, and testing and treatment for other STIs. No federal funding goes towards abortion, as mandated by law.

“The anti-Planned Parenthood rider states that no federal funding can to go Planned Parenthood, for any purpose. This would result in millions of women losing access to preventive health care like cancer screenings and birth control.”
