Montgomery County, NY. August 1, 2023. Christie’s International Real Estate Westchester and Hudson Valley Commercial Division, led by Bryan Lanza, Director and Licensed Real Estate Broker, is pleased to announce they have listed the historic Amsterdam Castle for sale with a list price of $6.85 Million. The magnificent property, once home to Isaac Singer, is a beautifully restored architectural gem. “I am very proud to be representing the seller on the sale of this spectacular property, one with such a wonderful provenance. This iconic, splendidly restored castle has long been considered to be among the most prominent and beautiful landmarks in the entire region,” said Lanza.
Amsterdam Castle, also known as “The Mohawk Valley’s Hidden Gem,” is a historic building located at 49 Florida Avenue in Amsterdam, NY and is an impeccable example of medieval-style architecture in the United States. The castle boasts 22 exquisitely designed rooms, and a total interior area of more than 26,600 square feet. It sits on approximately 1.9 acres with breathtaking views. Additionally, within the castle walls, the property features an exceptional 5 bedroom, 3 bath owner’s residence. Also on-site are three ancillary buildings with the potential of generating additional income.
Built by Isaac Singer, founder of the Singer Sewing Machine Company, the castle’s construction dates back to the late 19th century. Singer wanted to create a symbol of his success and a lasting legacy in Amsterdam. The construction took approximately three years to complete, and its design was influenced by the romantic medieval architecture popular during that time. The building featured a blend of Gothic, Romanesque, and Moorish elements, with turrets, pointed arches, and intricate stonework. The exterior was constructed of limestone and the interior boasted luxurious amenities, including ornate woodwork, stained glass windows, and extravagant furnishings.

Upon completion, Singer named his magnificent residence, “La Fortresse,” meaning The Fortress in French. Following Singer’s death in 1875, Amsterdam Castle changed hands several times. Over the years, the castle faced periods of neglect and deterioration, but its architectural significance and historical value were recognized by local preservationists. In 2013 the castle was purchased by the current owners, who had a vision to bring the castle back to life. Over the course of four years, with extensive work and a significant monetary investment, the castle now features modernized mechanicals, utilities, and a new interior.
With the unrivaled combination of its picturesque location, its rich history, and rare beauty and allure both inside and out, it is evident that the property’s new owners will continue the castle’s historical legacy.
