Burke Rehabilitation® Awarded Prestigious Cancer Rehabilitation Research Grant

White Plains, NY (November 18, 2025): Burke Rehabilitation®, a member of the Montefiore Health System, announced that Dr. Sharon Bushi was awarded the Tactile Medical Cancer Rehabilitation Research Award from the Foundation for Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation for her work. The $10,000 pilot grant recognizes Dr. Bushi’s work on physiatric rehabilitation for individuals who have disability related to cancer and its treatment. This is a competitive and prestigious award in the field, with a review and selection process free of outside input from sponsors.
“It is a tremendous honor to receive this grant from a leading organization such as the Foundation for Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation,” said Dr. Bushi. “This funding represents a meaningful step forward in our mission to improve the lives of individuals affected by cancer-related disabilities and allows us to explore new rehabilitation strategies that can restore function and independence to patients that turn to us for care and support.”
This research focuses on a vulnerable and underrecognized population—individuals with metastatic cancer living longer thanks to the advancements in treatment—who often face significant functional challenges. By improving understanding of their rehabilitation needs and outcomes, the study aims to help the post-acute care sector better serve this growing and medically complex group.
Beyond her work focused on effective strategies in providing evidence-based patient-centered rehabilitation for patients diagnosed with cancer, Dr. Bushi also serves as the Medical Director of Care Transitions and Director of Medical Student Education at Burke Rehabilitation Hospital.
“This recognition reflects the innovative spirit and deep compassion that defines the Burke team,” said Mooyeon Oh-Park, MD, MHCM, Senior Vice President, Chief Medical Officer of Burke Rehabilitation. “We are proud to support research that not only advances the field of rehabilitation medicine but also directly improves the lives of those we serve. Dr. Bushi’s work exemplifies our commitment to excellence, and we are honored to see it acknowledged on a national level.”
The award was presented during the PM&R Annual Assembly in Salt Lake City, UT in October. The Foundation for Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation is the only organization dedicated to supporting physiatric research to advance care for patients with disability. Through generous individual donations, the Foundation provides essential pilot funding for innovative projects such as Dr. Bushi’s. Since its founding in 2002, the Foundation has awarded nearly $3 million in research grants.
