Driver Knocks Down Fire Hydrant, Lamp Post on Main St.
A driver was arrested following the incident.
White Plains police arrested a driver on North Broadway after he sped down Main Street with county police following him on Wednesday around 6 p.m.
Witnesses said they saw the driver hit a fire hydrant and lamp post, knocking both out of the ground, in front of the City Center and then speed away on Main.
This Patch reporter witnessed the driver pull over and let a passenger out of the car, a black Bentley, before turning right on North Broadway, just before the police caught up with him on that corner.
The car's front right tire was completely flat.
White Plains police arrived and questioned the driver, a young man wearing a bright yellow shirt with “We are the lucky ones,” printed on it, and witnesses who rushed over to share their account of the accident.
Peter Brunner, 30, a White Plains resident who was standing on Mamaroneck and Main at the time of the accident, gave the police a statement. He said he saw the motorist make a right onto Mamaroneck from Main and drive between two moving vehicles.
“He made a hard left, slid into the post that fell, almost hit someone in the head, he then backed up a bit and just burned rubber around the corner going up Main Street,” Brunner said.
White Plains police handcuffed the driver about 15 minutes after they pulled him over. Police officials at the scene could not comment and investigators were unavailable for comment at the time of this posting.
