Fog: Who Put the White in White Plains?

The city was misty with white fog Thursday morning.

 

The mist that hangs over the city, as it did Thursday morning, can be so thick it looks as if a white blanket was laid over White Plains.

The city has long been known for its foggy plains, and the Westchester Archives say the city itself is actually named for it.

The Siwanoy Native Americans named the city Quarropas,which was home to influential Weckweesgeek leaders according to “Native New Yorkers; Legacy of the Algonquin People of New York,” by Evan T. Pritchard.

Westchester Magazine says in addition to being named “white marshes” for the white mist that hung over the marshlands and plains, it may also refer to groves of white balsam that populated the area at the time. White Plains was turned into an English settlement in 1683.
