Heating Season Begins; Homeowners should prepare for winter now

From price protection plans to a variety of options for heating, consumers have choices when preparing for winter

PORT CHESTER – September 17, 2024– As the home heating season begins, Robison is offering its customers new options for heating their homes this winter season.

From price protection plans to a variety of options for heating, Westchester County’s leading home energy company wants to prepare consumers for the winter season.

“There are many more variables now a days in preparing for the winter season,’’ said Dan Singer, CEO of Robison. “Despite a drop in crude oil prices earlier this month, a slew of unpredictable factors including an expected cut in production, interest rate cuts, economic uncertainty, and an active hurricane season, have experts forecasting extreme volility in heating costs will as we head into winter. Preparing in advance can save consumers stress and money.”

Singer said that Robison has a number of price protection plans that homeowners might want to consider to help them budget for energy costs. Plans range from pre-buying up to 18 months worth of oil while prices are lower; price cap protection, which sets a ceiling for the price for a fee, and fixed price protection, which means the price will remain at an agreed upon rate for the winter. For households on a fixed income, signing up for a level payment or “budget” plan, which spreads the cost out over 12 months, is recommended, said Singer.

Environmentally conscious consumers will be pleased to know that Robison now exclusively delivers BioHeat, which is a blend of 20% biodiesel, derived from renewable resources like soybean and palm oil, and 80% traditional heating oil. This cutting edge blend commonly referred to as “B20 biofuel” burns more cleanly than standard heating oil while significantly reducing greenhouse emissions, making it a sustainable choice for heating. It also reduces America's dependence on imported oil.

Homeowners looking for long-term solutions to their energy needs might consider installing geothermal heating and cooling systems. Depending on location and preference, homeowners can install an air source or a ground source heat pump. While both require electricity to run, they ultimately deliver more energy than they use, thanks to their ability to concentrate and move heat to specific areas. Systems can lower energy costs up to 50% and last approximately 25 years, greatly increasing return on investment.

Regardless of the type of energy used to heat homes, Singer said that it is wise to winter-proof your home to keep warmer and save on energy costs. Some tips include:

- Installing weather stripping, insulation, and storm windows.

- Insulating water lines that run along exterior walls.

- Have your heating system serviced professionally to make sure that it is clean, working properly, and ventilated to the outside

- Inspect and clean fireplaces and chimneys.
