About The Rose Garden
Lyndhurst’s fabled rose garden was first developed in the early 1900s when Helen Gould (a philanthropist and committed naturalist) owned Lyndhurst. Originally a pink tonal garden comprising roses from pale blush white to reddish pink, the garden has been restored to include many varieties and now, the Lyndhurst Rose Garden contains approximately 200 roses. Old garden and shrub roses include Bourbon, damask, hybrid foetida, hybrid musk, hybrid perpetual, rugosa, moss, and pimpinellifolia. Modern roses in the garden include hybrid tea, floribunda, polyantha, grandiflora, modern shrubs, ramblers, and climbers. The garden includes “single” roses with 4-7 petals, “semi-double” roses with 8-14 petals, and “very double” roses which may have as many as 40 petals.
