Do you or did you give your kids allowance money? If so, what age were they when you began providing an allowance? How much do you give them and how often? What are the pros and cons of this?

Were there any restrictions? As in the money can only be spent on X or Y. Did you change the amount and/or restrictions from one child to the next? 

How do you know they are spending it in an appropriate manner?
