The White Plains PTA is calling on its residents to write Sen. Suzy Oppenheimer, Assemblyman George Latimer, New York State Education Commissioner King, and New York State Board of Regents Chancellor Merryl Tisch to urge them for mandate relief. Unfunded state mandates, like pension costs, have been hurting school district and taxpayers across the state.
Mandated state pension costs have risen $1.9 million in the 2012-13 budget, when compared with the current budget. According to the PTA’s page on this information:
“White Plains 2010-11 pension costs were $8.6 million. Four years earlier was $7.8 million. Six years earlier was $3.0 million. Since the Governor and legislator have passed a Tier 6 pension level, and the State has already lowered the projected costs for next year, our future White Plains costs are an unknown.”
