Neighborhood Know-It-All: Mentoring, Lost Boys, and a Casting Call
Be a mentor, hear the story of a "Lost Boy of Sudan," get casted in "Zombie Prom," and more—this week in White Plains.
Let’s face it—everyone likes being a know-it-all. Arm yourself with knowledge and find out what’s happening this week in White Plains:
1.) Be a Mentor
You have the ability to change a life, and help guide a youth in your community down the right path. The is having a mentor program on Tues., March 22 between 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., at 11 Amherst Pl. 2.) Lost Boy Gabriel Bol Deng to Speak at WPHS
Gabriel Bol Deng was 10-years-old when an Arab militia destroyed his village. Listen to his story of how he survived war and worked to rebuild schools in Sudan. The event starts at 7 p.m.—on Wed., March 23 at the auditorium—with the film “The Lost Boys of Sudan,” which is followed by a discussion with Deng.

Admission is $5, and $3 for students—$1 of each ticket will go toward buying a “brick” to benefit Hope for Ariang, which supports education in Sudan.
Westchester Chapter of The Painting & Decorating Contractors of America (PDCA) based in Yonkers gave the Open Arms men’s shelter in White Plains a makeover. On March 12, more than 20 volunteers from the PDCA and crews from Sean O’Connell Painting Corp. of Armonk and St. Patrick’s Church in Armonk, painted 40 lockers, two hallways, two bathrooms, along with railings, trims, doors and ceilings to spruce up the 38-bed men’s shelter, which provides transitional and rehabilitative services.
Sherwin Williams Paint Co., Benjamin Moore Paint Company, K.R.B. Janitorial Supply Co., and Harrison Paint Supply donated paint and materials for the project.

Little Radical Theatrics Inc. is looking for 16 to 30-year-olds to cast in various roles for the musical “Zombie Prom.” Auditions will be held Tues., March 22 and Wed., March 23 at 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the , 216 Westchester Ave. Sign up is at 6:30 p.m. Click for details.
5.) White Plains Hospital’s Celebrates ER’s Anniversary With Mural
Almost 51,000 patients were treated in ’s emergency room since it was remolded one year ago. To celebrate, the anniversary hospital staff unveiled a series of murals in the Berk Family Pediatric Waiting Room. Kristin Linder of khlstudio, in Briarcliff Manor, who donated her time, painted the mural—which depicts soothing, colorful child-friendly scenes.
