Residents Get a Meal and Visit From the Mayor

White Plains Mayor Tom Roach delivered meals to eight residents on Tuesday, as a volunteer with Meals-on-Wheels of White Plains.

 

Edna Hun, who turns 100 next week, got a surprise birthday visit from Mayor Tom Roach Wednesday. 

The mayor spent the morning delivering meals to residents in the Battle Hill and Fisher Hill neighborhoods with .

“Mayor Roach has been a long-time supporter of Meals-on-Wheels of White Plains,” says Susanna Sussman, executive director of Meals-on-Wheels of White Plains.

“We are so pleased to have him on board. His participation in this event helps to draw attention to the vital role that our program plays in White Plains, as well as the crucial role of our dedicated corps of volunteers.”

In addition to a hearty meal, the Meals-on-Wheels program also provides homebound residents with companionship—knowing that each day they will get a visit from a friendly face. 

The Meals-on-Wheels of White Plains’ motto is “Delivering community and a meal with a smile since 1979.”

Wheels-on-Wheels of White Plains—which is is run out of —has more than 120 volunteers who distribute about 34,000 meals annually to residents who are unable to shop or cook for themselves, regardless of age or income.

White Plains delivers meals in seven routes throughout the city each weekday to about 60 residents—many who are elderly and/or have injuries or illness. A smaller group of residents also have meals delivered to them on Saturdays.

Roach’s participation in the Mayors for Meals campaign—started by Meals On Wheels Association of Americas, to involve more than 600 mayors in the U.S.—served to bring awareness to the national service.

Meals on Wheels of America’s website says the organization is “the oldest and largest national organization composed of and representing local, community-based Senior Nutrition Programs in all 50 U.S. states, as well as the U.S. Territories. These local programs are our MOWAA Members.”
