Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent for Christians, a 46-day (40 if you don’t count Sundays) period of penance, reflection and fasting. During Lent Christians will give something up or fast to thank God for sacrificing his only son (Jesus) so that the sins of the world could be forgiven.

On Ash Wednesday, Christians mark their foreheads with ashes, from palms burned the prior year on Palm Sunday. Receiving ashes is an act of devotion, penance and humility, and acts a reminder of God’s love for all.
