Thomas Roach: Acting Mayor of White Plains

Thomas Roach was sworn in as acting mayor of White Plains at city hall Saturday afternoon.

Correction: This article originally stated that Thomas Roach is the former White Plains Council President. Roach is still the council president, while he serves as acting mayor.

Thomas Roach is the acting mayor of the city of White Plains. Roach—the White Plains Common Council's president—was sworn in Saturday afternoon at city hall.

Roach—who will step down from his job as a lawyer at Mead, Hecht, Conklin, and Gallagher in Mamaroneck—found out that he would be assuming the city's highest political post Friday afternoon. He joined former Mayor Adam Bradley—who will be sentenced for on March 17—at press conference that evening, where Bradley announced that he would resign.

The city’s website now displays “Mayor Thomas Roach” above Roach’s photo. White Plains’ acting mayor said he plans to run in a special election to finish out Bradley’s remaining two-year term, which will be held within 60 days. Roach says he plans to spend the weekend working with the city's department heads to ensure that the mayoral transition runs smoothly.

Roach was first elected to the council in 2001, and became council president in 2004. He also ran in November’s election for New York’s 89th Assembly district, but lost by 112 votes.

According to his biography, he is chair of the city’s recreation advisory committee, and is a member of the personnel and green technology committees. He has also served on the Westchester County Global Warming Task Force, The Bronx River Watershed Committee, and the Westchester County Healthy Air Task Force.  Roach, who has survived cancer, is involved in various cancer charities.

The acting mayor lives in the Westminster Ridge neighborhood of the city with his wife, Beth, and sons Henry and Lawson—who are students at Eastview Middle School and George Washington Elementary School.
