Volunteer Opportunities Of The Week: Volunteer Grandpas Needed

HUDSON VALLEY, NY — Each week, Patch will be highlighting volunteer opportunities in the Hudson Valley. This will be a chance to help your community and be an opportunity to give back — perhaps in a way you didn't consider before.

This week, we are putting the spotlight on some opportunities in the Hudson Valley.

Volunteer Grandpas
Grandpas United is an intergenerational program between older men ("Grandpas") and White Plains youth aged 5-21. It provides group and one-on-one mentoring, ongoing activities, and special events. Grandpas United also creates an environment to support Grandpas by sharing with one another their talents, skills, and experiences to maintain their dignity, self-respect, and self-worth. Volunteers do not need to be biological grandfathers in order to participate—they only need the time and spirit to give, to be 55+, and to be able to pass the required background check and fingerprinting.

College Access Summer Program Assistants
Volunteers will help rising high school seniors jump-start their college applications and personal essays. (They will not edit or write the essays for students; just provide thoughtful support.) An advisor will be present to provide guidance and answer questions. Volunteersmust be 18+ and complete a background check and application.
Date: 7/22 and 7/29 from 1-2 p.m.

Moves for Mental Health Event
One Paso's Moves for Mental Health event includes free community resources, fitness and wellness segments, anti-stress activities, and mindfulness activities. Volunteers are needed to assist with setting up, decorating, offering refreshments to attendees, and assist attendees with activities. Volunteers must speak Spanish and be able to lift up to 15 pounds. Perfect for teens and small groups!
Date: 7/26 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. and 1-5 p.m.

Home Litter Care Volunteers
BluePath Service Dogs is seeking Home Litter Care Volunteers who live within 45 minutes of its Wappingers Falls facility to welcome a breeder mom (brood) and her pups into their homes for approximately five weeks. Volunteers provide early socialization and care for the youngest future service dogs while offering love and support to their mom. The time commitment varies based on the size of the litter, but it includes intensive cleaning, regular feeding, walking, and daily grooming. All equipment and supplies are provided (with the exception of newspaper). Volunteers must be 25+.
