Westchester Disabled on the Move Receives a $20,000 Grant

Yonkers, NY – January 15, 2025 – Westchester Disabled on the Move (WDOM) has received a $20,000 grant from New York State to help people find, get and keep healthcare insurance.

WDOM is part of a network of community-based organizations that serve as Community Health Advocates (CHA), providing free, one-on-one assistance to help people access low-cost or free care, solve billing issues, understand healthcare reform and their healthcare rights, and much more.

Maria Samuels, executive director of WDOM, thanked State Assemblymember Amy Paulin for her assistance in obtaining the grant which will help many families stay insured. She also thanks the Community Service Society (CSS). “Amy has been tireless in advocating for us and other agencies like us who help people navigate our complex healthcare system. Access to health insurance and healthcare is one of the key determinants of longevity and the ability to live an independent life,’’ said Samuels. “We also thank CSS for making these services available to organizations statewide.’’

Assemblymember Amy Paulin said, “I’m so pleased to have helped Westchester Disabled on the Move secure a $20,000 grant from New York State for Community Health Advocates. Healthcare, insurance, billing and reimbursements are complicated. As Assembly Health Committee Chair I’m acutely aware of this and am working to improve the system, but we need CHA and their key partner community-based organizations like WDOM, which provide free help to residents navigating the healthcare system. Founded in 1984, WDOM works to help people with disabilities, the elderly, and low-income families live independent lives by providing them with access to healthcare, housing and other assistance through government programs.

Since 1999, CHA has assisted more than 445,000 clients through a diverse network of community-based organizations (CBOs) like WDOM.
