White Plains Names in the News: Herbert Block

White Plains resident Herbert Block, the assistant executive vice president of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC), a leading international Jewish humanitarian agency, was recently appointed by President Barack Obama to the U.S. Commission for the Preservation of America's Heritage Abroad.

The commission serves as an independent Federal agency established to help preserve cultural sites in Eastern and Central Europe associated with the heritage of U.S. citizens.

“I like the friendly community and all the resources available in the city,” said Block, of White Plains. “I have worked in government and Jewish communal organizations because I believe in public service and feel a responsibility to help improve the community-at-large.”

Block, who has lived in White Plains for 11 years, is also involved with Young Israel of White Plains, and has served on their synagogue board. He is also on the Board of the Hebrew Free Burial Association of New York.
