White Plains Reduces Speed Limits On City Streets
The mayor said the lower speed limit will make White Plains streets safer for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists.
WHITE PLAINS, NY — Motorists traveling in White Plains will have to slow down.
Mayor Thomas Roach said Friday that the city speed limit will be reduced from 30 mph to 25 mph citywide.

“The reduction of the citywide speed limit from 30 mph to 25 mph is a necessary, long-awaited change that will make our residents safer,” Roach said. “Vehicles moving at a lower speed reduces incidents of fatalities and are better able to avoid crashes.”
In 2022, Governor Kathy Hochul signed legislation to help prevent traffic-related crashes and fatalities by allowing municipalities to reduce speed limits to 25 mph.

In February, the White Plains Common Council determined that making roadways safer in the city is a top priority and approved an ordinance reducing the speed limit throughout White Plains from 30 to 25 mph.
Starting in May, the White Plains Transportation Department will begin the process of installing new signs indicating the new citywide 25 mph speed limit.
All city streets except for the following will see the changes:
- Bryant Avenue
- Central Avenue
- Central Westchester Parkway
- Mamaroneck Avenue
- North Broadway
- North Street
- Old Mamaroneck Road
- Tarrytown Road
- Westchester Avenue
- White Plains Avenue
