White Plains Set to Demolish Lyon Place Parking Garage

Demolition to run about 10 weeks; new garage slated to be open in early 2014.

Demolition on the dilapidated Lyon Place parking garage is set to begin next week to make room for a new, 619-space garage.

With the demolition, the City of White Plains warns that drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians will see changes to traffic patterns in the area. Waller Avenue is currently closed between East Post Road and Lyon Place, with Waller Avenue set to re-open in both directions after the estimated 10-week demolition period.

Construction of the new garage is expected to begin as soon as demolition of the existing garage is completed, according to the city.

White Plains acquired the Lyon Place garage in March from the Esplanade assisted care facility. The structure had been closed to the public because it had fallen in a state of disrepair.

The obtained the property from the Esplanade at no cost in exchange for a 99 year occupancy agreement in which the Esplanade will have use of 160 parking spaces and pay share of operating costs.  The city has slated 459 spaces to be available to the public.

Lyon Place will also be closed during the demolition - except for local access. Lyon Place will likely remain closed during the bulk of the construction. Additional street closures may be required as construction commences, although these are expected to be brief, according to the city.
