Winterize your driveway and avoid costly repairs
A properly maintained driveway can last for decades, and a little preparation now can prevent costly damage later.
As winter approaches, Thalle Industries’ Dakota Concrete, a provider of concrete services in the lower Hudson Valley, offers essential advice on how to protect driveways from the harsh effects of freezing temperatures.
A properly maintained driveway can last for decades, and a little preparation now can prevent costly damage later.
“The freeze-thaw cycle is an enemy of concrete. Water seeps into tiny cracks, freezes and expands, causing the concrete to deform and crack. Homeowners can take proactive steps to prevent this,” said Thalle Industries President and CEO Glenn Pacchiana.

The Montrose-based Dakota Concrete recommends the following three-step process for winterizing driveways:
- Clean it thoroughly: Remove all dirt, oil, and debris. A pressure washer is effective, but a stiff broom and a hose work well too. Ensure the driveway is completely dry before moving to the next step.
- Seal it: Applying a high-quality, penetrating concrete sealer is the most crucial step. The sealer acts as a waterproof barrier, preventing water from seeping into the pores and cracks.
- Use de-icers sparingly and wisely: Avoid using rock salt or de-icers containing ammonium nitrate or ammonium sulfate, as these chemicals are highly corrosive to concrete. Choose products that are concrete-safe. Shovel snow promptly to reduce the need for de-icers.
