Anti-White Supremacist Demonstration Planned In Greenpoint

Organizers said the rally was in response to apparent neo-Nazi material surfacing in the neighborhood.

GREENPOINT, BROOKLYN - A protest against white supremacist groups is scheduled for Friday in McGolrick Park in Greenpoint.

It would be the latest in a series of fervent demonstrations in the city since last weekend's white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Va. and subsequent controversial statements from President Donald Trump.

A Facebook page for the McGolrick Park protest cited a report of apparent neo-Nazi material turning up in Greenpoint as a reason for the demonstration.

"Greenpoint, and all of Brooklyn, will not tolerate racism, fascism, antisemitism, islamaphobia, transphobia, ableism, white supremacy, or oppression in any form," the page stated. "The despicable calling cards of Nazis found in Greenpoint show our community is not safe to Nazis."

Black Lives Matter activist Kenneth Shelton, Jr., who's scheduled to speak on Friday, said recent events make it an opportune time to talk about ongoing racial issues.

"Those on the right who are really radical are violent representations of what America really is, and that’s a white supremacist country," he told Patch. "In order to address it, you have to address it locally."
