Man Stole Rare Comic Books From Windsor Terrace Stoop: Police

He was arrested trying to unload the two comic books, worth about $12,000, police said.

WINDSOR TERRACE, BROOKLYN — A man stole rare comic books off of a stoop in Windsor Terrace and was arrested when he tried to pawn them off to comic book stores, police said.

Kenneth Gaynor, 40, snatched a package off of a doorstep in the neighborhood on August 28, according to police. (No address was given.)

Little did he know that the package contained two rare comic books from 1963 — Amazing Spider-Man #1 and X-Men #1, according to the Daily News. The Spider-Man comic was worth about $11,000 and the X-Men comic another $1,000, the News reported.

The Windsor Terrace man who had originally ordered the comics went to the authorities, and police were contacted by several comic book stores about a man trying to pawn off the stolen goods, police said.

So authorities set up a meeting with Gaynor on Monday, saying they were interested in purchasing the stolen books, according to police.

Gaynor showed up to the meeting carrying the stolen comic books and was arrested, police said. He was charged on two counts of criminal possession of stolen property, one of which was a felony and the other a misdemeanor, according to police.
