One Of Brooklyn's 'Worst' Basketball Courts Gets An Upgrade

Renovations start Monday at Dome Park in Kensington.

KENSINGTON, BROOKLYN — Upgrades started Monday on a basketball court that was once named one of the "worst" in all of Brooklyn.

Phase II of renovations at Dome Playground, on the border of Kensington and Borough Park, have begun, the second of two stages of upgrades for the park.

This round of work will focus on the basketball and handball courts on the park's Eastern side, near the intersection of Cortelyou and Dahill roads. Work is expected to be completed in April of next year, according to a Parks Department timeline.

In 2015, Wall Street Journal reporter Stu Woo spent two weeks on his bicycle surveying all of Brooklyn's basketball courts and ranking them first to worst. The courts at Dome Playground checked in at No. 143 out of 172.

"This triangular-shaped park has a full court and two half courts, all filled with bad paint and worse cracks," Woo wrote at the time.

Besides the updated courts, the renovations include new accessible ramps, an "adult fitness zone," a reconstructed park entrance, new benches, updated lighting, new plantings and an accessible drinking fountain.

The first phase of renovations on the playground finished about a year ago. Those upgrades included an expanded kids play area, better drainage and new play equipment

The project was funded by the offices of Mayor Bill de Blasio, Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams and City Councilman Brad Lander.
