Another Murder Sentence For Courtyard By Marriott Killer

Roy A. Johnson Jr., who killed the father of a Marist College student, was sentenced for the unrelated fatal shooting of another man.

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY — The man who was convicted and sentenced for shooting and killing the father of a Marist College student during a parents’ weekend was sentenced to another prison term for an unrelated murder.

Roy A. Johnson Jr. was sentenced Wednesday to 25 years to life in prison for the murder of Darren Villani in August 2022, MidHudson News reported.

Additionally, he was sentenced to 25 years in prison for each of three robbery charges. All sentences will run concurrently.

Prosecutors said Villani was shot and killed by Johnson and Devin A. Taylor on Mansion Street near Bement Avenue in the city of Poughkeepsie on Aug. 9, 2022.

In April, Taylor was sentenced to 22 years in prison for fatally shooting Villani, News 12 reported, after pleading guilty in March.

Taylor received a seven-year sentence for a weapons charge related to the death of Paul Kutz, 53, of East Northport, Suffolk County, at the Courtyard by Marriott hotel on South Road in Poughkeepsie in October 2022. Kutz had been attending a parents’ weekend at Marist College.

Johnson received 58-1/2 years in prison for the murder of Kutz.
