NC COVID Cases Jump By 4,623 New Cases In A Day
As of Tuesday, there were fewer than 300 staffed intensive care unit hospital beds remaining in North Carolina.
NORTH CAROLINA — The spread of COVID-19 in North Carolina rose by more than 39,000 new cases over a seven-day span, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Tuesday.
The state's case count, which has ballooned to nearly 1.2 million, makes it the ninth in the nation for total coronavirus cases, behind Ohio and ahead of New Jersey, CDC said.
Tuesday, the count grew by 4,623 newly confirmed cases, increasing the state's positivity rate to nearly 15 percent, according to North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services.

The news comes as state public health officials report about 49 percent of the population is fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

Hospitalizations for COVID-19 saw a slight dip Tuesday, with 3,342 patients hospitalized in North Carolina medical facilities, down from 3,353 patients reported one day earlier.
As of Aug. 24, at least one out of every four COVID patients hospitalized in the state for COVID illness were in an intensive care unit, leaving fewer than 300 — or about 13 percent — of the state's staffed ICU beds available, according to DHHS data.
