NC Vaccine Manufacturer Seqirus Will Deliver 150M Does Of Flu Vaccine

Seqirus Holly Springs, in North Carolina, will deliver 150 million doses of flu vaccine to the U.S. government.

NORTH CAROLINA — Seqirus Holly Springs is ready to produce and deliver 150 million doses of flu vaccine in North Carolina, which has given the facility national recognition.

The Holly Springs facility, located at 475 Green Oaks Parkway, was called "pandemic ready" by the U.S. government last week for its pandemic vaccine production and distribution, which would be needed in the event of an influenza pandemic.

Seqirus, one of the largest influenza vaccine manufacturers in the world, will distribute the cell-based pandemic influenza vaccines to support rapid response in the event of an influenza pandemic or other public health emergency.

The Seqirus facility is the first and only company in the U.S. to receive the designation for domestic production.

“In the event of an influenza pandemic, Seqirus will be able to produce 150 million doses of its cell-based pandemic influenza vaccines right here in Holly Springs, where it also produces millions of seasonal flu vaccine doses every year,” a press release read.

Seasonal influenza differs from pandemic influenza. Both can cause severe illness and life-threatening complications in some patients, according to the release. Pandemic influenza, like coronavirus, is dangerous because there is “likely to be little or no pre-existing immunity to the virus in the human population,” according to a statement from Seqirus.

Four influenza pandemics have occurred in the last century, including the 1918 pandemic, according to Seqirus.
