📰 News we're reading

1. Town Council interviews 2 candidates for interim town manager role (blackmountainnews.com) — Black Mountain’s Town Council has interviewed two candidates to serve as interim town manager after Josh Harrold’s resignation, effective Jan. 26. Council is also weighing three executive search firms, including one that recently led the search for Asheville’s new city manager, to help hire a permanent leader shaping local services and priorities.

2. Cathedral of All Souls holds Christmas Eve at St. George's amid restoration efforts (wlos.com) — Asheville’s Cathedral of All Souls is still worshipping at St. George’s Episcopal while its historic Biltmore Village home recovers from Helene’s severe flooding. Parish leaders describe stronger turnout this Christmas Eve and outline plans for flood-resilient rebuilding, including architectural designs due in February and a capital campaign to raise about $1.5 million.

3. 'Return to Bethlehem' brings nativity to life every Christmas season (wlos.com) — An immersive “Return to Bethlehem” experience in Asheville transforms Groce United Methodist Church’s gym into a bustling ancient marketplace and live nativity, drawing about 1,500 attendees each Christmas. Organized by ABCCM and more than 30 local churches, the production relies on roughly 70 volunteers per show to offer a scripture-based, walk-through retelling of the Christmas story for the community.

4. Today in History December 24 (tigerdroppings.com) — Among the historical notes, this piece highlights George Vanderbilt opening the Biltmore Estate in Asheville on Dec. 24, 1895, still the largest privately owned house in America. It places that milestone alongside other world events, from the Treaty of Ghent to modern weather records, in a “today in history” style timeline.
