• Kiwanis distributes grant funding to area schools (averyjournal.com) — Banner Elk families may notice new resources at Banner Elk Elementary, thanks to Kiwanis-funded Woolly Worm grants supporting fine motor skills, social-emotional learning, and a new educational greenhouse. The same grant program is sending more than $35,000 to schools across Avery County, backing everything from high school life skills and theater to field trips, art supplies, and classroom furniture.

• Southern Sun Farm Sanctuary receives $100,000 donation (averyjournal.com) — A Banner Elk resident, Ginny Burton, has made a $100,000 gift to Southern Sun Farm Sanctuary, an equine rescue near West Jefferson. Her donation will fund a new nine-stall barn and care facilities, and the farm is inviting additional contributions, including naming opportunities, to finish the project and support abused and abandoned horses.
