• Stein announces hundreds of millions for infrastructure projects in WNC (carolinajournal.com) — Burnsville is set to receive over $13 million to upgrade drinking water supplies and repair key sewer lines damaged by Hurricane Helene, part of a massive state investment in western North Carolina infrastructure. Local landlords in Yancey County can also apply for new Renew NC funds to repair small rental properties if they agree to keep rents affordable for a decade.
   

• Environmental advocates and residents continue to confront Forest Service about Helene recovery concerns (wunc.org) — A public meeting at Burnsville Town Center about Hurricane Helene forest recovery and logging plans has been rescheduled to January 15, 2026, giving residents more time to prepare questions and concerns. Regional advocates and neighbors are pressing the U.S. Forest Service on new roads and salvage logging in Pisgah National Forest, worried emergency powers are being used to bypass normal environmental review.
