Davidson Police Warn Of Catalytic Converter Thefts In Region
Davidson police issued a warning about a specific type of auto theft emerging in the region. Here are the vehicles they say are targeted.
DAVIDSON, NC β Davidson Police are urging area residents to take extra precaution when securing vehicles at night, citing a growing trend in catalytic converter thefts throughout the Charlotte metro region.
The thefts have targeted Toyota Prius and Honda Element vehicles, DPD said.
"According to industry experts, there is a precious metal contained within the converter, and criminals are cutting them off vehicles at victimsβ homes and selling them illegally," DPD said in a statement, via Facebook.

Police said residents should take extra precautions to secure vehicles, "preferably inside a garage, or place cameras to capture potential theft on video."
The crimes have occurred between midnight and 5 a.m., and were completed in under five minutes.

"All residents are encouraged to lock all your doors and remove valuables each night to minimize the chance of becoming a victim of opportunity," DPD said.
