23 Guns Have Been Found At These CMS Schools Including An AR-15

HUNTERSVILLE, NC — Almost two dozen firearms have been discovered in CMS schools in the fall semester of the 2021-2022 academic year, a new record for CMS schools.

Previously, 22 firearms were discovered in CMS schools in the 2018-2019 school year; however that was the course of the entire year. So far in the 2021-2022 academic year, 23 firearms have been discovered in 19 on-campus incidents.

Conversations about how to deal with the uptick in guns have escalated, with CMS spending almost half a million dollars on clear backpacks for high school students, which some parents say is not enough to stop weapons from making their way into classrooms.

Just one week ago, a shot was fired on the West Charlotte High School campus by a student fighting over a backpack in the school parking lot. No one was injured, but the incident left many demanding more action on the part of CMS.

A town hall took place in Huntersville where school board member Rhonda Cheek floated the possibility of metal detectors as a potential deterrent. A firearm fell on the floor at Hopewell High School in Huntersville in November during a fight between students.

According to public records obtained by Patch, these are the schools where firearms were discovered this semester and what type of firearm it was.

Just seven of those firearms were stolen, according to CMS.
