Dog Park Honoring MPD Officer Sheldon To Soon Open: Details
The new Mooresville dog park honors the memory of MPD K-9 Officer Jordan Sheldon, who was shot and killed during a traffic stop in 2019.
MOORESVILLE, NC β Man's best friend will soon have a new space to call their own in Mooresville. The Officer Jordan H. Sheldon Memorial Dog Park is set to open to the public on Saturday, June 5, the Town of Mooresville announced.
The new dog park is located at 247 Cornelius Road in Mooresville, and honors the memory of Mooresville Police Department K-9 officer Jordan Sheldon, who was shot and killed during a traffic stop in May 2019.
Sheldon, 32, was shot and killed with a semiautomatic handgun during what police described as a "routine traffic stop" along West Plaza Drive around 10 p.m. May 4, 2019. Police later identified the suspect behind the shooting as Michael Yovany Aldana, 28, of Mooresville. Aldana fled the scene after shooting Sheldon, and was later found dead from a self-inflected gunshot wound in a nearby apartment.

The Town of Mooresville and the Mooresville Youth Council are hosting the park's June 5 grand opening ceremonies. The event is set to run from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m., and will feature food trucks on site and MPD K9 demonstrations, organizers said.
For those searching for a new pet, the Lake Norman Humane Society will also be at the park during the event offering pet adoptions.
