Hospitalizations Dip, Nearly 2,000 New COVID Cases In Iredell

In the past week, the number of known COVID-19 cases rose by 1,195, according to the Iredell County Health Department.

MOORESVILLE, NC — The number of known COVID-19 cases in Iredell County rose by 1,195 newly confirmed cases last week, according to Iredell County Health Department data released Monday evening.

Since Jan. 1, more than 4,000 new coronavirus cases have been reported in Iredell County, representing about 30 percent of the total 13,400 cases reported in the county since March 2020.

As of Monday, Jan. 26, at least 60 county residents were hospitalized for coronavirus related illness, representing a decrease of about six hospitalizations in the past week. At least 164 Iredell County residents have died from COVID-19, according to ICHD. The death toll includes at least a dozen deaths reported in the county since Jan. 19.

Iredell County is one of 86 counties in North Carolina where coronavirus spread is considered to be at a critical level, according to DHHS.

Community spread of COVID-19 continues to impact schools. At least three of the 56 positive COVID-19 cases reported in Iredell-Statesville Schools last week were a result of secondary spread within a school, the school district reported. The news comes as community spread of COVID-19 led to 1,006 students and 132 school district staff members to stay home either with symptoms or in quarantine out of caution, ISS saidFriday.

Between Jan. 15 and Jan. 21, at least 32 students and 24 school district staff members tested positive for COVID-19, the school district said.

Healthcare workers, long-term care workers and anyone 65 years old and older are eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccination during a drive-through vaccination event this week in Mooresville. The Friday, Jan. 29 vaccination event will be held at Mazeppa Park, located at 645 Mazeppa Road in Mooresville beginning at 10 a.m.

Health officials ask that participants print out and complete a registration form, which may be found here. If participants are unable to print the form ahead of time, registration may also be complete on site, organizers said.
