Huntersville Man Leads Mooresville Police On I-77 Chase

The Huntersville man led MPD on a chase after an automated license plate reader alerted them that his vehicle tag was stolen, police said.

MOORESVILLE, NC — A Huntersville man is facing numerous felony drug charges after he fled from police and led them on a chase from a Mooresville drug store to Gilead Road, Mooresville Police Department said Friday.

The Feb. 24 incident began after MPD officers received an alert by an automated license plate reader that the tag on the vehicle driven by Cody Robert Hammond, 27, of Huntersville was listed as lost/stolen, MPD said.

MPD officers found the vehicle with the tag in the parking lot of Walgreens, located at 230 East Plaza Drive.

"As officers were on foot and approaching the vehicle, the vehicle fled the parking lot," police said in a report. "Officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop but the vehicle failed to stop, and a pursuit entailed."

Hammond led officers from the drug store on Highway 150 south on Interstate 77, exiting on Gilead Road in Huntersville, where he was apprehended.

Hammond was charged with felony possession of Schedule I controlled substance (heroin); felony possession of a Schedule II controlled substance (cocaine); assault with a deadly weapon on a government official; reckless driving to endanger; and speeding to elude. He was transported to the Iredell County Detention Center, where his secured bond was set at $250,000, MPD said.
