I-77 Driver Saved From Opioid Overdose North Of Mooresville

Travelers reported a person in a silver SUV driving erratically, and law enforcement found the person in dire need of help at a rest area.

IREDELL COUNTY, NC — The Iredell County Sheriff's Interstate Criminal Enforcement Team was notified Tuesday that a person in an silver SUV was driving erratically north on I-77 and quickly began searching for it near exit 59.

According to the sheriff's department, they found the SUV at the closest rest area after it had already struck a guard rail and several trash cans.

When deputies got out of their patrol cars and got closer to the SUV, they saw the driver slumped over the steering wheel, listless. They immediately forced the driver's door open and found the driver not breathing.

The sheriff's department states they saw drug paraphernalia in the car and quickly administered NARCAN to the driver after laying him on the ground and getting the NARCAN out of their first-aid kits.

NARCAN is a nasal spray administered to people who appear to be suffering an opioid overdose that counters the opioids.

The driver started breathing again and regained consciousness, per the sheriff's office.
