COVID-19 Cases Connected To Secondary Spread In Iredell Schools

IREDELL COUNTY, NC — At least three of the 56 positive COVID-19 cases reported in Iredell-Statesville Schools last week were a result of secondary spread within a school, according to Iredell-Statesville Schools.

The news comes as community spread of COVID-19 led to 1,006 students and 132 school district staff members to stay home either with symptoms or in quarantine out of caution, ISS reported Friday.

Between Jan. 15 and Jan. 21, at least 32 students and 24 school district staff members tested positive for COVID-19, the school district said.

Of the students reported as out, at least 408 were in quarantine due to a school contact, 409 were in quarantine from a possible community contact, and 189 were isolating with COVID-19 symptoms, ISS said.

Among staff members, at least 31 were in quarantine due to a school contact, 54 were in quarantine from a possible community contact, and 47 were isolating with COVID-19 symptoms.

Community spread of the virus continues to surge throughout Iredell County. As of Jan. 22, at least 194 new cases were reported in the span of a day, increasing the county's tally of known cases to 12,943. At least 56 county residents were hospitalized Friday, and 163 deaths attributed to the virus, according to the Iredell County Health Department.
