Here are the top stories today in Mooresville:

  1. There truly is no "I" in team! Perhaps no one knows that more than the Quiñtero family. A true soccer mom, "Tonia Quintero has watched from the stands as her three boys grew up and played soccer at Mooresville," according to WBTV. However, five years ago she was diagnosed with breast cancer and two weeks ago her health took a bad turn that put her in hospice. Mooresville soccer coaches Paul Kikta and Susie Hudson came up with an idea for Thursday night's game and had everyone dress in pink to show their support of Tonia and her son Ivan who got to have his senior night, a year early, to ensure that his mom, his biggest fan, was there to see it. “It’s crazy, crazy how many people can come through. Hopefully, my mom sees all these people here to support her, and it helps her with this battle,” said Ivan according to WBTV. What a great illustration of how tight knit, caring and unified our community is! (WBTV)
  2. According to Motor Sports Newswire, "Rick Ware Racing (RWR), the NASCAR mainstay boasting more than 1,000 starts in multiple premier auto racing series, recently announced its return to supercross as one of 10 exclusively licensed teams for the inaugural FIM World Supercross Championship (WSX). RWR’s entry into the WSX series is part of the team’s broader marketing initiative to expand into a global Motorsports presence." (Motor Sports Newswire)
  3. Two heart transplants, a verve to live and a positive attitude — that's what is keeping 12-year-old Sophia Brownlee going. According to Spectrum News, "a year ago, she started swimming competitively on the Harbor Seals swim team in Mooresville. It has been a long medical journey to get to this point. Brownlee has been swimming since she was little. She says when she’s moving in the water, her mind is at ease. At age 11 Brownlee's body started to reject her first transplanted heart and she had to undergo another heart transplant surgery that kept her out of the water for weeks. “I was sad when I couldn’t go into the water after the first six weeks of my transplant,” Brownlee said. Despite any challenges ahead, Brownlee says she is living her life to the fullest and hopes to be an inspiration for others battling similar medical challenges. According to the Cleveland Clinic, about 50% of people who receive a heart transplant survive after 10 years. But in children that number is higher. About 70% of children survive past 10 years with a heart transplant. It’s why the family is pushing for more research and funding with the nonprofit Enduring Hearts. It helps children living with heart transplants."(Spectrum News)
