Here are the top three stories today in Mooresville:

  1. Since January 2022 there have been over 1,400 reported cases of domestic violence and sexual assault in Mooresville. In an effort to combat this problem the Mooresville Police Department along with other agencies across the state, hosted a domestic and sexual violence symposium on Wednesday. Those in attendance were introduced to new sexual assault kit initiatives, the N.C. Superior Act, pre-trial release violations and other information about the impact of this on the local community. 2. In August 2020, Mooresville Police officers shot and killed a man outside his home when they were dispatched to a domestic assault call. Recently the body camera video of what happened that night has been released. According to WSOC Charlotte, "38-year-old Christopher Kimmons Craven died in the incident. Afterward, Craven’s widow filed a wrongful death lawsuit in the case. That lawsuit was dismissed by a judge, which allowed for the release of one of the officer’s body camera video. In the footage, you can hear the two officers assessing the scene. When officers arrived at the home, they found 38-year-old Christopher Kimmons Craven on the porch. He was reportedly suicidal and had a gun. They asked him to show his hands but said he didn’t listen and reached for his gun instead. “Let me see your hands, get on the [expletive] ground,” an officer yells. Multiple shots were fired, killing Craven in his front yard. His family was inside. The district attorney in Randolph County investigated and cleared the two officers involved."(WSOC Charlotte)
  3. If you’re wanting to add a fuzzy ball of four-legged love and affection to your life, you should check out these Mooresville area animal shelters for a pet up for adoption. For those looking to adopt, a great place to start your search for a new fur child is at Lake Norman Humane, where Petunia the dog is waiting patiently, or another local adoption center. If you aren't sure if you have time to take care of a pet year round, many shelters also offer opportunities to foster pets until they are placed in permanent homes. With help from our friends at Petfinder, Patch has compiled this week’s list of animals available for adoption near you. Whether you’re looking for cuddles or companionship, one of these animals could be the perfect fit for your family. Click on any listing for more information or to start the adoption process.
