Here are the top three stories today in Mooresville:

  1. Today marks the beginning of several new state laws! According to the Mooresville Tribune some of those laws include: "Tougher penalties for certain types of arsons and large-scale thefts at stores in North Carolina are among ten new state laws approved by the General Assembly. The enacted legislation creates new felony crimes for setting fire to a prison, an occupied commercial structure or an unoccupied commercial structure. Arsonists also will face a felony if a first responder suffers a β€œserious injury” from the blaze. Another law attempts to crack down on large, organized thefts at stores. Crimes of β€œorganized retail theft” already are on the books, but now there are more serious felonies when the value of property stolen over a 90-day period exceeds $50,000. Store owners also can recover stolen goods more quickly and sue thieves for specific damages. Wildlife Resources Commission officers will be able to accuse someone of a misdemeanor when a person breaks rules the commission creates to respond in an emergency to a serious wildlife disease. The previous law had limited such punishments to $25 fines. Used car dealers also can now face $50 fines if they fail to formally inspect a vehicle before it's offered for sale, something they're already required to do. That's part of an omnibus motor vehicle and transportation law. Another new law taking effect attempts to remove any enforcement gaps in domestic violence protective orders while waiting for courts to act. This allows a judge to extend such an order temporarily beyond its expiration date until a hearing to renew it is held. And the range of criminal convictions that require an offender to provide a DNA sample now will extend to domestic violence protective order violations, through another new law. (Mooresville Tribune)
  2. According to a recent Facebook post on the Town of Mooresville page, "The Town has announced the selection of Christopher Lee as the new Technology & Innovation Director for the Town of Mooresville. Lee has more than 16 years of experience in state and local government information technology. Most recently, he served as the IT Director for the Town of Cornelius and prior to that in various IT roles for the North Carolina General Assembly. Lee will begin his duties for Mooresville on December 12. β€œChristopher brings a wealth of experience to lead our team of innovators and technology professionals that serve our internal and external customers,” said Beau Falgout, assistant town manager. β€œWe look forward to his leadership and working with him to build on the town’s foundation of innovation and using technology to improve our operations to better serve our community.” Lee holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from North Carolina State University, as well as numerous certifications in the information technology field." 3. Residents take note, according to The Town of Mooresville Facebook post, "Summer Street will be closed between Nesbit Avenue and College Street, starting December 5 at 8 a.m. Due to Town of Mooresville infrastructure improvements, Bell Construction will close that stretch of Summer Street until approximately February 6, 2023. East Mills Avenue (College Street to Brawley Avenue) will reopen to traffic Friday afternoon, December 2. Nesbit Avenue will remain closed to traffic for several more weeks."
