- In honor of their daughter WylieRae Henson, Amanda and Nic Henson started a 501(c)(3) non-profit called WylieRae’s Love. Three-and-half-year-old WylieRae and her family live in Mooresville. When she was just 6 months old she was diagnosed with a brain tumor and has been fighting ever since. She has undergone surgeries, blood transfusions, chemotherapy, physical therapy and more. “We want to give back to others going through this hardship,” Amanda said according to a WBTV article. “Our mission is to help children under the age of three who are going through the burden of cancer treatments. We found there wasn’t much for her age group and we want to provide loveys, blankets, adaptive clothing, age-appropriate toys, resources for parents, etc.” For more information on how you can donate, go to http://www.wylieraeslove.com. - The NASCAR Technical Institute in Mooresville hosted students recently to give them a closer look at the in-demand science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) careers within NASCAR. According to a WCNC .com article, "The goal is to expose youth to these high tech, high demand trades in the automotive industry," Jennifer Bergeron, president of NASCAR Tech Campus, said. The institute has over 50,000 square feet of lab space. It offers three programs with different specialties students can choose from: automotive, computer numerical control (CNC) and welding. The Technical Institute also offers financial aid, housing assistance, and career services. Automotive training programs start every three weeks while CNC and welding programs start every six weeks." - Mooresville educators take note! According to the Mooresville Tribune, time is running out for local K-12 teachers to apply for grants of up to $2,000 from EnergyUnited. Educators who are interested in implementing a creative and innovative classroom project and submit their grant application for the cooperative’s Bright Ideas Education Grant program by Aug. 15 will be entered to win one of five $100 Visa gift cards in a statewide drawing. Teachers can find the application, along with grant-writing tips and program information, on the Bright Ideas website at ncbrightideas.com." (Mooresville Tribune)
