NC Peace Officers' Memorial Day Ceremony: How To Watch Thursday

MOORESVILLE, NC — North Carolina will pay tribute to officers who have been killed or disabled while in the line of duty with a ceremony to be held this week.

The service is set to honor Mooresville Police Department K-9 officer Jordan Sheldon, who was shot and killed during a traffic stop in May 2019, MPD said.

Sheldon, 32, was shot and killed with a semiautomatic handgun during what police described as a "routine traffic stop" along West Plaza Drive around 10 p.m. May 4, 2019. Police later identified the suspect behind the shooting as Michael Yovany Aldana, 28, of Mooresville. Aldana fled the scene after shooting Sheldon, and was later found dead from a self-inflected gunshot wound in a nearby apartment.

The Peace Officers' Memorial Day Ceremony is set for Thursday, May 6 at 11 a.m., the North Carolina Attorney General's Office announced.

The service will be a closed ceremony due to current pandemic guidelines, with only family and agency representatives of honorees in attendance, organizers said. The ceremony may be viewed online via live stream.
