Here are the top four stories today in Mooresville:
- It's a scary time for students in the area and not because school is tough and there are lots of upcoming tests to study for, but because there are safety threats being made to the schools. According to WBTV, "threats were made to at least five schools in Cabarrus and Iredell counties via automatic robo calls. They led to mass evacuations Tuesday morning for four Cabarrus County schools — Cox Mill Elementary and Jay M. Robinson, Northwest Cabarrus and Cox Mill high schools — as well as Mooresville High in Iredell County. Consequently, students and teachers at Mooresville High School were learning remotely Wednesday. Mooresville’s police chief said they scoured the high school but didn’t find anything. However, the district felt like a remote day would be the best option. “It just allows everyone to kind of come back down after the stress of today (Tuesday) and gives them the opportunity to have that extra day of investigation,” Tanae McLean, communications officer for Mooresville schools, said." (WBTV)
- Changes to the safety protocol at Mooresville High School football games were announced this week and will go into effect at Friday's game. According to WCCB Charlotte, "the changes are as follows: All elementary, intermediate, and middle school students WILL NOT be allowed entrance to a home football game without a supervising adult. Students must be supervised throughout the game. If any elementary, intermediate, or middle school student is unsupervised at the game, they are subject to removal from the game. The student’s parent/guardian will be contacted to come pick them up. No bags will be allowed except medical and diaper bags, as well as clear stadium bags. Medical, diaper bags, and clear stadium bags will be subject to search. Walk through metal detectors will now be utilized. If the detector goes off during your pass-through, we ask for your cooperation as we investigate what triggered the detector. If possible, patrons are encouraged to utilize the online ticketing system and take a screenshot of their ticket. This will assist with getting people through the gates in a more timely manner. Taking a screenshot will prevent issues with connectivity and accessing your ticket online. You can purchase tickets online. And, for safety reasons, standing outside of the fence to watch the game is prohibited." Hope to see you at the game!(WCCB Charlotte)
- After suffering a life-threatening injury on Friday, Mooresville Police Department's own K9 Valor is back home. According to a MPD Facebook post, "on Friday, K9 Valor suffered a mesenteric torsion which almost took his life. Due to the fast reaction of handler Corporal Beck and the amazing doctors and staff at Aloha Veterinary Hospital, K9 Valor is healing and was released late this afternoon. To make this story even more amazing, a caring Mooresville resident covered the cost of K9 Valor's care! We are beyond grateful for her generosity!!! We are hopeful K9 Valor will make a full recovery and be able to return to duty soon. As Corporal Beck can tell you, Valor is ready to be back in action! Thank you, from the bottom of ALL our hearts at MPD, to everyone who has helped K9 Valor be able to return home to his family tonight!" (Mooresville Police Department via Facebook)
- Being in the right place at the right time makes all the difference. According to Fox 46 Charlotte, "a woman drove into Lake Norman Wednesday afternoon, according to Mooresville Fire. The incident happened around 3 p.m. near Williamson Road across the street from Eddie’s. Officials say the woman veered off the road into the lake, and that’s when the civilian jumped in to help. That person released the driver’s seatbelt and pulled her out of the car. A boater nearby also jumped in to help; they swam the woman safely to the dock.
She was rushed to a local hospital for safety measures." (Fox 46 Charlotte)

- Town of Mooresville NC: "The second contract for the Town’s FY22 resurfacing contract has begun. Starting earlier this week and continuing until September 26 contractors will be working on removing striping adding crack seal along the Byers Creek Road, Talbert Pointe Drive, Plantation Ridge Drive, Singleton Rd, and White Oaks to prepare the streets to have micro-surfacing applied. This first step should cause minimal disruption to motorists. As the project moves forward, we will be reaching out to residents though our Blackboard Connect system about when to expect the micro surfacing process to begin."
