North Iredell Man Faces 10 Sex Crime Charges: Sheriff
The victim told a school counselor that the sexual assaults occurred over a three-year period, Iredell County Sheriff's Office said.

IREDELL COUNTY, NC — A north Iredell County man has been arrested and now faces 10 sex crime charges after a minor reported a series of sexual assaults spanning a three-year period to a school counselor, Iredell County Sheriff's Office said Thursday.
The victim, who is a student at North Iredell High School in Olin, told a school counselor in early November they had been sexually assaulted by an acquaintance. The counselor notified ICSO, which began an investigation. The child was also interviewed at the Dove House Children’s Advocacy Center, ICSO said.
According to ICSO, the crimes reportedly occurred between September 2017 through August 2020.

Based on evidence collected, ICSO obtained arrest warrants for Nathaniel Murry Smoot, 25, of Harmony for six counts of felony statutory sex offense and four counts of felony statutory rape, ICSO said.
Smoot was arrested Jan. 16 and transported to the Iredell County Detention Center, where he was served with the warrants. His secured bond was set at $1.5 million.
