Here are the top three stories in Mooresville today:
- Sixty-nine-year-old Mooresville resident David Kiley officially became a member of the 2022 U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Hall of Fame class this weekend. His name has been invcluded on the same list as athletic greats such as Michael Phelps, soccer player Mia Hamm, figure skater Michelle Kwan and skier Lindsey Vonn. For the past 50 years, Kiley has been focused on what he could do, not what he could not do after his devasting snow tubing accident left him paralyzed from the waist down. According to an article in the Charlotte Observer, "Kiley’s signature sport was wheelchair basketball, where he was unofficially recognized as the best player in the world for a number of years. But he also won Paralympics medals in Alpine skiing. And for a while, in 1976, he was the fastest wheelchair athlete in the world in track and field." Congratulations David. You are amazing! (Charlotte Observer)
- Mooresville teens, 14-year-old Lucy O’Neill, 14-year-old Zoey Mazzara, and 13-year-old Catherine McAdams, all Girl Scouts (Cadette level) from Troop 13036 in Mooresville recently earned Silver Awards after completing community service projects in the area. The three earned money for the individual projects by holding a fundraiser last fall in front of Lowe’s Home Improvement. Each of them prepared their own products to sell. They used their money to complete their Silver Award projects. According to the Mooresville Tribune, "The Silver Award, which requires a minimum of 50 hours of community service, is earned after a scout identifies a need in the community, plans a project and leads the project (including any fundraising). Lucy noticed the access to feminine hygiene products at school was problematic and wanted to address this issue. Zoey was passionate about creating a project involving law enforcement and Catherine wanted to increase opportunities for book exchange in the community." Congratulations girls! (Mooresville Tribune)
- According to The Center Square, "a group of Republican state lawmakers are sponsoring legislation to crack down on 'free' electric vehicle charging stations." So they've introduced House Bill 1049, which would "require stores that offer free electric vehicle charging stations to disclose what the service is costing customers and would ban free charging on state properties that do not also offer free gasoline and diesel." (The Center Square)
