Here are the top three stories today in Mooresville:
- According to the Mooresville Tribune, "Republican U.S. Rep. Ted Budd won North Carolina’s open Senate seat on Tuesday, defeating Cheri Beasley while extending a losing streak for state Democrats seeking a spot in that chamber. Budd, a three-term congressman, will succeed retiring GOP Sen. Richard Burr, who entered the Senate in 2005. As a candidate endorsed by Donald Trump and ready to embrace the former president’s support, Budd will provide a more hardline conservative voice in the Senate than Burr, who voted in 2021 to convict Trump at his impeachment trial related to the Jan. 6 Capitol riot." - According to Iredell Free News, "FC Athletico’s Fiorentina won the championship in its age bracket over the weekend during the NCFC visitRaleigh.com Showcase Series, a nationally recognized event for the level of competition it attracts. Fiorentina (U11) competed in one of the top brackets. In pool play, they tied one match and won two, including a 4-1 defeat of the No. 1-ranked team in North Carolina, to advance to the championship game on Sunday. In the title game, Fiorentina faced top-ranked Prince William Courage (Va.) with Fiorentina winning 2-1. The Fiorentina players were motivated to win for their head coach, Tinashe Mugabe, who couldn’t attend due to a family emergency in his hometown in Zimbabwe, and “they played their hearts out to make it happen,” according to one parent. Fiorentina is coached by Tinashe Mugabe and Charlton Mhlauri. The team manager is Jesse Atkinson." (Iredell Free News)
