  1. Honoring her Mexican heritage, Mooresville’s Maria Elena Valdez is learning what it takes to be queen. According to a WHQR article, Valdez's journey started as a promise to her family and now it has become a mission to honor her Mexican heritage through song as North Carolina’s ‘Queen of Mariachi.’ Valdez began signing mariachi music as a child, but in those days, she was too shy to perform. However, now at age 57 she has released her first album, Porque te conocí, ‘Because I met you’, composed by Martin Carrión. The collection of songs pays homage to the traditional music of her youth and its deep roots in Mexican ranch or charro culture. Congratulation Elena, dreams do come true! (WHQR)
  2. The Court of Appeals ruled Tuesday that some of the restaurants that closed during the pandemic, when government orders restricted their services, can't be recompensed for those financial losses through their commercial insurance policies. According to a Mooreville Tribune article, "the unanimous ruling by a three-judge panel reverses an October 2020 decision by Superior Court Judge Orlando Hudson in Durham County. He declared the language in the restaurant owners' policies provided coverage for lost business income and extra expenses when government orders limited the access to and use of their eateries. However, Court of Appeals Judge Chris Dillon, writing Tuesday's opinion, said the panel agreed with the insurers who argued the governmental restrictions didn't result in “direct physical loss or damage to the property” that are required for payouts." 3. Surf on Lake Norman! Yup, you read that correctly. Surfing the man-made waves on Lake Norman is a new form of the popular, traditional ocean sport that is reportedly catching on. With more than 32,000 acres of water, Lake Norman is the state’s largest man-made lake and according to an article in Blue Ridge Outdoors Magazine, surfing on the lake behind a boat specifically made to produce a large wake is the way to do it. Do you think you might like to try it out? (Blue Ridge Outdoors Magazine)
