Community helps Rowan County family after home explosion (wbtv.com) — A Salisbury family on Laurel Street lost nearly everything after a house fire and explosion, and neighbors are rallying to help. Kiddie Land Kindergarten, where several family members have long worked, is collecting coats, blankets, food, and other supplies at its South Long Street location so local residents can directly support the Washington family.
   

2. Salisbury requests public feedback on historic design standards (salisburypost.com) — Salisbury’s Historic Preservation Commission wants your input on updating design standards for the downtown historic district, and a public survey is open through Feb. 2, 2026. Anyone can respond, but residents, workers, and property owners downtown are especially encouraged, and future public hearings and regular commission meetings listed on the city website will further shape the final rules.
   

3. From Coal to Carbon Neutral: Catawba College Paves the Way (rmi.org) — Catawba College in Salisbury is aggressively upgrading its campus to stay carbon neutral, from a new geoexchange district energy system to a net‑zero Smokestack student hub and ultra‑efficient residence hall. These projects modernize aging buildings, cut long‑term costs, and position the college as a regional model for clean energy and resilient infrastructure that benefits students, staff, and the wider community.
   

4. Annual law enforcement Christmas event helps less fortunate (salisburypost.com) — Local law enforcement officers from Salisbury and nearby towns just teamed up for the annual Shop with a Cop event, giving 22 local kids $200 each to buy Christmas gifts at Walmart. Backed by Salisbury sponsors like F&M Bank, Cheerwine, and local civic clubs, the program aims to support families in need while helping children see officers as caring neighbors and mentors.
   

5. High school football: East-West All-Star Game includes 3 former SHS coaches (salisburypost.com) — Three former Salisbury High football coaches, including state-championship winner JK Adkins, will help lead the West team in Sunday’s East-West All-Star Game in Greensboro. The matchup showcases top high school talent statewide and spotlights the continued impact of Salisbury-connected coaches on North Carolina football.
