Here are the top three stories today in Wilmington:
- On Wednesday, May 3, the Wilmington Police Department held a training exercise involving multiple drones and rescue boats. The training exercise also included the department's Marine Unit along with other first responders and was intended to sharpen the team's skills when it comes to any type of drone operations and water rescues. Several agencies including the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office were on site for the session. (WWAY)
- New Hanover County's NCWorks Career Center will be hosting its "Discover New Opportunities" hiring event on Tuesday, May 9. The event will be hosted by NCWorks and the Cape Fear Workforce Development Board and will go from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. This multi-employer career fair will be looking to fill positions for housekeeping, administrative support, retail merchandising, custodial maintenance, and more. - The 48-year-old high-ranking Bloods gang leader from Wilmington has officially been convicted on charges of trafficking heroin, fentanyl, and cocaine. Don Eugene Mixon was convicted on eight counts, including conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute heroin and fentanyl, distribution of heroin and fentanyl, and possession with the intent to distribute heroin. He faces a possible sentence of up to 320 years in prison. (Justice.gov)

- Wilmington's local classic, Casey's Buffet, is currently in the top 20 finalists for USA Today's 10 Best Readers' Choice buffet restaurants in 2023. - On Thursday, May 11, Lugar De Encuentros/Place of Encounters is the newest exhibit opening at Cameron Museum. The exhibit features a variety of paintings, photographs, videos, and site-specific installations from artists like Nico Amortegui, Cornelio Campos, Rodrigo Dorfman, and so much more.
